Professionally a Visual Artist for over 30 years, I occasionally have poems that come to me. The past year I have dealt with Breast Cancer. My collection of works on this site reflect this unexpected and difficult journey. The Pirate Crew Paper Doll Collection is a Breast Cancer Educational Tool featuring Ms. Mastectomy, Ms. Chemotherapy, Ms. Radiation, Ms. Oophorectomy, and Ms. BRCA2. The First Day Of #SPRING

Bright sun on all snow land.

Windows still closed but lighter jacket on.

So much waiting.

So much changing.

New ventures.

Same challenges as always.

Lopsided

My breasts are lopsided.

The silicone disks each doing its own thing.

The plastic surgeon was great and apparently at some point these gummy boobs settle.

I was going to show you a photo but then wondered if that would be porn.

But how are these things under my skin different than the steel plate in my wrist or my knee caps?

Interestingly, strange with a Frankenstein scar where a nipple should be. One breast an inch lower than the other. These pretenders are so funny.

All In The Room

We are All In This Room.

Together.

Finally.

Angus home from West Point - painfully agreeing to spend 3 nights away from Athena at the cabin. Now reading Muscle Magazines next to me on the couch. We hiked up Mount Cardigan today with a foot of snow, then we gave two stranded hikers a ride back to their car. Fiona, quiet on our bed reading teen magazines.

All together now, just for a fleeting moment. I'm not under the illusion that this hour will last beyond the night.

Thank you God for this cabin, be it small and humble - it is our only property. I don't know the next time Angus will agree to be with us in this place.

Kicking Pillows

I have a pillow issue. These squares of various hues and textures bring me joy.

Others in my family mock my demand, flinging the arrangements on floor and behind couch, annoyed by such item, impractical in functionality by long torso-ed men.

GREY SKY

The actual sky is Grey.

MAINE in Grey.

Grey is beautiful and complicated.

There is no Sadness in this rich color.

I am not sad when I paint with Grey.

I am mature and seasoned and the painter I strive to become.

Two weeks without a shower...

In the middle of the night I awoke to the smell of me...

I’ve used wipes, hair salons, and cornstarch...

Today, with the Dr's permission, I hope to get the drains out...

Then 24 hours more and I can stand beneath a long earned cascade of cleanse...

It’s been interesting to smell pungent for long...

Add in 10lbs

I can't get rid of this tire around my middle.

I exercise and eat fairly healthy.

10lbs heavier than I've ever been, thinking it was the new silicone implants and then Dr confirmed - it's what happens. Add it to the over all suck. The theme of the season is round, round head and round belly.

It is what it is.

Buckled in Maine

The upward track clicks and clacks in noise suspense. Buckled in there is no escape. Crowded into the car, we all sit, silent. Nearly at the top, we lift arms high to feel the free fall drop. I love wooden roller coasters. Being out of control and safe, dropping the stomach - funny. Swishing and gravity play.

The Oncologist said the next five months of Chemo will be like riding one. So here I sit, the next week clicking up the hill. Not alone, another controlling the ride. Nervous about the plunge but in general comforted by the analogy because I've always eventually exited the ride.

Running my first 5k without stopping to walk.

Internal mantra of strength and endurance.

I hate running but did it still.

Keeping a good pace, I pushed till the end and then sprinted to finish,

a strength unknown to me that I possessed.

Lord, may this race symbolise the weeks to come with endurance painting in MAINE.

Under Barbed Wire

We watch them crawling necks on earth.

Barged wire scratching and pricking backs.

Ranger school promo video demonstration of a snake, subtle and in war; while you my army sun, crawl on your stomach, so will I.

Trying hard to avoid pain of barbs. Through a ranger challenge or different sort. Chemo and radiation - an ordeal of strength, a trial of fitness and the irradiation of weakness.

SlowTime

Just Me.

Sleeping 10 hours.

Granola and coffee in silence.

Empty time for refuelling.

College Process, Foster Kid Drama, Audit.

Graduation All Over.
